Natural Industry: Animation, Short Film & Visual Art
2009 - HMP Barlinnie
Adults affected by mental illness
Theatre nemo delivered a multimedia arts course to a group of 12 prisoners over 12 weeks. During the course we explored various Visual Art techniques such as abstract painting, still life and sculpture. We created a short film titled 'The Door' which shows prison live from the mixed experiences of the group. Also created within the course was a short animated film titled 'Austin's Squishy Adventure'.
While working with prisoners our aim is to have positive impact on the rehabilitation of prisoners in order to create happier and safer communities. The way we do this is through personal development, which means that we try to develop all the soft skills like communication, negotiation, confidence in learning and positive recreational activity. Throughout the course the group will learn to work as a team and support one another. We also teach practical and transferable skills while creating film and animation. The participants are involved in all aspects, which means they use up to date professional software to edit video and sound giving a solid foundation in IT skills.
“I found the work of the participants very interesting and particularly enjoyed the two short films. I was really impressed in the work and effort that was put into it. I hope it gave them a sense of self-worth and pride. Theatre NEMO seems very worthwhile.” “Overall, the workshops were of great benefit to the group which participated. Self-esteem and confidence had noticeably increased over the weeks that they attended.” “...the big level of achievement surprised others and the participants alike - keep going!” “This is a great opportunity for the guys. It builds confidence, self-esteem and introduces new skills, some which they can build on and move forward with.” “I think groups like Theatre Nemo are a positive way for people to be creative and to focus their thoughts away from negative aspects of their lives. It can promote other ways to focus time and energy and I think people get a lot out of it.”
