HMP Barlinnie

Since october 2004, Theatre NEMO has been providing workshops in HMP Barlinnie.

With funding for one year secured from the SPS Choose Life fund and for three years from the John Paul Getty Trust, Theatre NEMO works in the prison for three 10-week blocks each year.

A large percentage of prisoners in Barlinnie suffer from mental ill health problems. The approach we adopt helps to de-stigmatise mental ill health and allows self-expression. Our workshop facilitators work with the prisoners helping them to build their confidence and self-esteem.

over 10 weeks, the groups work towards a production, be it a play or producing a video.

In the most recent session, the group performed the Slipper Factory to an invited audience in HMP Barlinnie Chapel. Previous to this they performed an adaptation of Animal Farm in 2006.
